Booth Presentation Ideas

  • Virtual Rounds
  • TotalView
  • LittleFe (hardware and software)

Notes for 9/9/08 Call

  • Did you talk to Fitz and Brad for sure about presenting the modeling stuff?
    • Yup, they're game.
    • Talk to Bob about doing a similar presentation in the booth
  • Do we want signs for the booth for the Little demos?
    • Yes, Kay will look into signage generally
  • We have a full session for GNU and Intel tools but is TotalView included in that?
    • No it's not, let's schedule a booth session for TotalView
  • What is the difference between Benchmarking and Tuning Methodologies and Tools for Parallel Programs and Intel/GNU Tools
    • One is the basic compiler and libraries, the other is gprof, PAPI, etc.
  • Can we split the 3:30 - 5:00 on the 18th into two sessions?
  • We need to put someone on the EduGrid presentation
  • We haven't confirmed these talks with people!!
  • We need abstracts for all of these, Kay is finding-out when they are due

Brainstorming

Focus - development, debugging, and deployment of MPI and OpenMP based software

All presentations are 90 minutes unless otherwise noted.

For each of these we'll need to produce/gather:

  • Level, pre-requisites, expected outcomes
  • Hands-on labs
  • Slides
  • (See Paul's email)

1) Tools Track

  • 1a) GNU tools - gcc, gprof, gdb, gcov, etc. (Charlie/Paul) - 45 minutes
  • 1b) Intel tools - icc, etc. MKL (Charlie/Paul) - 45 minutes
  • 1c) TotalView debugger (Paul) - 45 minutes
  • 1d) MPI - introduction () and advanced ()
  • 1e) OpenMP - introduction (Christian/Greg)
  • 1f) GNU Scientific Library + NetLib + BLAS implementations + vendor libraries - 45 minutes ()
  • 1g) Benchmarking and tuning methodologies and tools for parallel programs - PERFCTR, PAPI, gprof, etc. (Paul/Charlie)
  • 1e) CUDA - introduction (Christian/Greg) - 45 minutes? How widely applicable?
  • 1f) SPRNG (Michael Mascagni) - 45 minutes? Includes a lab? How widely applicable?

For the GNU and Intel tools BobSCEd is one platform where we have both. Put BLAS libraries there. Test heavy MPI/GE and MPI/OFA loads.

2) Using Grid Resources

  • 2a) Using TeraGrid Resources (ScottL/BradA) - 45 minutes
  • 2b) Using Edu-Grid Resources (Paul/Kay/Charlie) - 45 minutes
  • 2c) Using Open Science Grid Resources (Alina) - 45 minutes

3) Supercomputing in Plain English - Introduction (Henry/Charlie) Include HASS and K-12

4) LittleFe

  • 4a) Hardware (Charlie) Schedule in the booth
  • 4b) Software (Alex/Kevin/Skylar/Charlie) Schedule in the booth

Others we may help with, in particular the HASS and K-12 tracks would like Collaboration Tools. We should schedule these to be available to as many people as possible, and not have instructor conflict.

5) Collaboration Tools

  • 5a) Moodle (Charlie/Kay)
  • 5b) Wikis (Kevin/Charlie/Kay)
  • 5c) 3DI (Jessie/Tom/Charlie)
  • 5d) Mashups? (Charlie/Fitz)

Consider shot-gun or shut-gun plus guided tutorials.

6) Modeling and Simulation

  • 6a) NetLogo (Fitz/Brad)
  • 6b) Fire (Brad/Fitz)

7) K-12 Outreach (Brad/Fitz/Charlie)

Dropped Topics

  • Which MPI implementation should I use? ()
  • Supercomputing in Plain English (Henry/Charlie)
    • Storage hierarchy
    • Processor hierarchy/ILP
    • Others?
