Description
Computational Biology for Biology Educators
For persons interested in an in-depth introduction to dynamic modeling and bioinformatics, with a focus on their use in the undergraduate biology classroom. Participants new to computational science or those who have attended an interdisciplinary workshop are encouraged to attend. Also, prior participants are encouraged to apply.

Computational Biology and Chemistry
National Center for Supercomputing Applications
June 2-6, 2008
Computation has revolutionized both chemistry and biology. In both disciplines, computer simulation and analysis have become central to both understanding and progress in research.
The theme of this workshop will be on using computation to illustrate important ideas in biology and chemistry classroom and laboratory teaching, and to enable scaffolded and independent exploration by students and instructors. A special feature is that computational chemistry and bioinformatics research computing tools are made readily available for teaching and learning.
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications on the UIUC campus has created an interface to optimize the connection between lesson material, background and advanced information, and computing tools in both biology and chemistry. This interface can be seen at http://www.bsw-uiuc.net/moodle/Tutinfo.php which is with the web site of the Biology Student Workbench project http://bsw-uiuc.net/ During the workshop attendees will be able to compose new lessons within the interface.
The time at the workshop will be divided roughly into thirds as follows:
- Introduction to existing lessons, information sources, and computational tools in the biology/chemistry interface for teaching, learning, and exploration.
- Workshop attendees will compose new lesson material tailored to their particular instructional needs within the NCSA biology/chemistry teaching interface. (Attendees will have continued remote access to this environment after the workshop ends.)
- Attendees will present their work-in-progress to each other and critique each other, to provide the best possible foundation for
continued development after the workshop ends.
WHEN: June 2 through June 6, 2008 (arrive Sunday evening: leave Saturday morning)
