Ramblings (Suggestions) by Paul Gray

Scott has often mentioned the desire to have "new" participants cycling through the education program. At the same time, he has commented on how the top-level SC program would like to see the education program as supporting and furthering the SC program as a whole.

I suggest that we look at the following approach:

  • For SC07, solicit participants in the usual way (whatever "usual" means).
  • For SC08, the solicitation would focus primarilly on attracting new participants.
  • New for SC08 and SC09: the education program would have a new category, namely the "SC Education Fellow." An "SC Education Fellow" would be a previous SC Education program participant with something to demonstrate or contribute to the SC Education program.
  • However, the SC Education fellow would presumably not need or want to be involved in the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and possibly Monday goings-on of the Education program. An "SC Education Fellow" would be invited back to participate starting at Monday night's opening gala or Tuesday's Education program and would present on their activities over the past year. This would give the new participants insight as to what their objectives should be post-SC.
  • The Education Fellows program would be competitive, in the sense of "limited in number".
  • Further they would be expected to contribute all, or at least part, of the associated expenses related to the conference. My thoughts here are that they would be at least expected to pay for conference registration, thereby showing the SC Program that new funds are being generated from the education program.
  • Lodging and/or travel assistance (and the desire to contribute back to the SC Education program) would be the award of the "SC Education Fellow" application

Those were my thoughts -- comments?
