SC07:Mentoring subcommittee

Here are some initial ideas about the Mentoring subcommittee.

A "mentor" is an experienced computational scientist or engineer who is willing to provide assistance to a student in the SC07 Education Program. Students will be high school and undergraduate faculty. The assistance can include:

  • Answering questions about CSE projects
  • Suggesting resources
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Monitoring progress
  • Encouraging students to persevere

The contacts between a mentor and a student can be "in person" at a program workshop or at the student's or mentor's site. The latter would require pairing mentors and students in the same geographical region. Alternatively, the contacts can be via telephone or email. The MentorNet program (see link on main page) was suggested to facilitate this kind of contact.

Ideally, the relationship between student and mentor will continue for the duration of the students participation in the program which could be several years.

To get started we need volunteers for two roles:
