Draft of possible questions for participants of the March 23-24 meeting at UCHRI

Context:

We are planning a meeting on March 23-24 at UCHRI. You are being invited as a faculty member in the humanities, arts or social sciences (HASS) interested in integrating cyberinfrastructure (CI) and high performance computing (HPC) tools and resources into your courses. The objectives of the meeting are to:

• Understand the various aspects of CI and HPC that could enhance the teaching and learning in your courses • Identify current successful methods of using or introducing CI and HPC in HASS courses • Recommend topics that should be offered in workshops for faculty and students • Outline strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of the efforts

To help the planning team to better prepare for the March 23-24 meeting, we ask you to respond to the following questions. Please provide brief, descriptive responses and when appropriate an explanation for your response rather than a simple yes or no answer.

1. What CI and/or HPC technologies are you familiar with already? (e.g. data management, data analysis, visualization, GIS, modeling and simulation, parallel programming, applications codes/packages, etc.)

2. What CI and/or HPC technologies would you like to learn more about?

3. Are you familiar with TeraGrid, Open Science Grid, HASSgrid, other grids?

4. Do you know whether they have potential to enhance your courses?

5. What topics are you teaching?

6. What technologies are you currently using in your teaching?

7. What technologies do you feel have the potential to enhance student learning?

8. What are key concepts that you feel students could more quickly learn through the use of technology?

9. Do you know of exemplars or best practices of using CI and/or HPC in HASS courses?

10. Do you know of exemplars or best practices of using CI and/or HPC in HASS research?

11. What three topics would you consider most important to be addressed in a workshop among your peers?

12. Which CI or HPC tools would you most like to learn to use through a hands-on tutorial or workshop?
