SC07:High School Program

From SC Education

Jump to: navigation, search

Several people expressed interest in programming at SC07 for high school programs during the September 30 conference call.

They include but are not limited to the following:

Margaret Corbit, Cornell Theory Center

Bonnie Bracey, GLEF

Jesse Bemley, Joint Educational Facilities, Inc.

Susan Ragan, Maryland Virtual High School

Mano Talaiver, Institute for Teaching Through Technology & Innovative Practices

Brad Armosky, Texas Advanced Computing Center

Event: Challenge Tour/Treasure Hunt of Exhibit Floor, Tuesday of SC 2007

Audience: Nevada MESA Students and whomever Jesse Bemley brings to the conference from JET.

Number: Probably 16-20 MESA* high school students plus their chaperones. 5-10 JET students.

  • Corbit contacted Stanley T. Omaye, Professor, UNR, who coordinates the Northern Nevada MESA

program. He suggested that we involve someone from CS at his university. They have 25 students total in their program, which should be just right, since they include a middle school and we will not be bringing anyone under 16 into the program, assuming that there are insurance issues for students under 16.

Activities: Will be planned with MESA reps. We will probably need a couple of conf calls to work out plans for the activities with Stanley and his colleagues. In our last call, we said we want something fairly structured like a treasure hunt that requires the students to actually talk to people and get answers to questions or some kind of confirmation that they have explored a visualization, for example. Note: Jesse's JET students will participate in other parts of the Education Program as well.

Next step: Divvy up responsibilities

!Recruit exhibitors who will be prepared to receive and have an activity for the teens. Fermi Lab, for example had a "particle cloud chamber" at SC06 that would have been attractive.

!Recruit and coordinate with students and chaperones (Corbit/MESA)

!Design activity

!Design hand outs/materials

!Coordinate commitee chaperones for small groups

!Raise money for printing and lunch (other things?)

Please contribute your ideas here.
