Panel for SC09
- Submission date April 3
- SC08's panel was "we need to do it"
- SC09's should be "here's one way do it"
- Proposal doesn't need to be very long
- Panelists from various backgrounds
- Panel will work to have a debate for the pros/cons
- Put out a strong position, and get people to debate it
- Can we narrow down a position down to a couple statements?
- Use as kick off point
- Focus on the people who are currently trying to get this stuff into the curr.
- If general panel, audience would be much more technical than it would be in the education program
- The general conference would be people involved in graduate education, so they will be looking at this generally, rather than undergraduate specifically.
- Distinguish between major/non-CS-major, first year, etc.
- In the general conference, education is seen as a way to forward industry, education program is concerned because it's what they do all the time
- Target it because industry needs college grads with experience in parallel program
- Questions we should be asking:
- What are the skill sets needed by national labs/etc from recent grads?
- What are the general ideas that we want grads to be able to know about upon graduating?
- Edcation program targets undergraduate education
- General conference has a much much wider audience (DOE labs, University labs, etc)
- If we focus purely on undergraduate, audience will be much smaller
- Tom, Paul, Wen-Mei, Michael, Matt to work on proposal(s) for panel
- Companies represented on this call that are big competitors, yet on this point they are highly interested in cooperation
- Try to get one each from at least 2 competitors on panel and/or on proposal/article
- e.g. Steve Parker from NVIDIA and Micheal Wrinn from Intel
- Try to get one each from at least 2 competitors on panel and/or on proposal/article
- Declining CS enrollment as hook
- Academics here will have a hard time getting something done soon (end of the school year)
- It would be nice to have something well before SC
- Use wiki. get some prose into it for all to review
- Possibly NSF funds to extend education program
- Deadline is probably about to pass
- If group can support funds to put into Education program
- Get some proposals to draw more industry and educational folk
- CPATH deadline is a month from today
- CCLI solicitation is coming up December
- Meet at Berkeley workshop near the end of the summer?
- Good number of people already going to be there
- "Teach Parallel": internet discussion about Parallell/Concurrency discussion
- Audience is natural science undergraduate teachers
- Should increase to a broad audience
- Good starting place is SIGCSE attendees
